Research Projects 2013 – Present The New School for Social Research | Graduate Program in Sociology | New York, NY Governing Flows: International Migration and Market Regulation in a Tri-Border Area. This Ph.D. research project focuses on Ciudad del Este, a city created by decree in the 1960s in the Paraguay-Brazil-Argentina tri-border area. It aims to understand how state regulations on market issues encourage migration in order to make sense of the nature of contemporary capitalism and state. It is based on critical analyses of national and local legislation, ethnography and interviews, and puts forth the hypothesis that in the last half- century states have shifted their capabilities from ensuring national identities and sovereignties to promoting globalization processes. 2010 - 2012 University of São Paulo (USP) | Graduate Program in Sociology | São Paulo, Brazil Relational Networks of Chinese Migrants and "Informal" Commerce: A Story of Globalization as Told by 25 de Março Street. The individual research investigation was my master’s project and intended to understand processes related to recent migration flow of Chinese sellers to the city of São Paulo. The research uses ethnography, interviews and analysis of official and unofficial documents to make sense of how relational networks foster global fluxes of people and goods, for the purpose of understanding the nature of the so-called “informal market” in a globalized era. It resulted in a master’s thesis entitled A Story of Globalization as Told by 25 de Março Street: Chinese Migrants and “Informal” Commerce. 2008 - 2009 University of São Paulo (USP) | Institute of International Relations | São Paulo, Brazil Regional Collective Security Regimes: A Comparative Approach in International Regimes Theory. This individual research focused on two regional security organizations: North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). From a constructivist approach it addressed the topic of regional security organizations in order to understand how collective security, originally expected to emerge only in a global context, became predominant in regional regimes. It resulted in the awarded BA thesis entitled Regional Collective Security Regimes: The case of Shanghai Cooperation Organization. 2007 - 2008 Social Observatory Institute (IOS) | São Paulo, Brazil Socio-Economic Impacts of China-Brazil Trade. The research had the goal to collect and analyze bilateral trade data, as well as productivity and employment data about the Brazilian industrial sectors most affected by Chinese competition. The purpose of the multivariate analysis was to understand better contemporary work patterns in order to recommend strategic actions for Brazilian and other countries’ unions and to orient public policies. It resulted in the theoretically-inspired and empirically-grounded policy memo Brazilian Economy after Chinese Growth: Sectorial Analysis of Trade Patterns, Employment Impacts and New Business Strategies. 2007 - 2008 Conectas Human Rights (CDH) | São Paulo, Brazil Monitoring Brazil’s Foreign Policy at the United Nations on Human Rights Matters. This collective research was part of a Foreign Policy Monitoring and Human Rights Project developed under the auspices of Conectas Human Rights. It aimed to monitoring Brazilian foreign policy in Human Rights forums of the United Nations with the view to publicize aspects of foreign policy. Votes, speeches, proposals and rapporteurs’ records were analyzed to make sense of the role of Brazilian delegation in the transition from the United Nations Human Rights Committee to the United Nations Human Rights Council. The project had support of the Brazilian Committee for Human Rights and Foreign Policy. It resulted in the publication of the co-authored book Human Rights Annuary: 2007.
